전미번역상과 루시엔 스트릭 번역상 수상을 통한 한국문학 사랑

“전미번역상(The National Translation Award)은 매년 미국문학번역가협회(ALTA)에서 주관하며 영어로 번역된 최고의 번역가에게 수여됩니다. 심사위원들과 시상 주체가 서로 다른 번역상이어서 특이하지요. 그래서 일반 도서번역상과는 달리 권위가 있어요. 이 상은 출판되는 책뿐만 아니라 번역의 질을 특별하게 반영하고 있습니다. 또한 아시아 지역에서 이 상을 받은 것은 이번이 처음입니다. 이것은 단지 한국 문학의 영역(英譯)뿐만 아니라 아시아 문학의 영역에 있어서도 중대한 사건이 되었고 전 세계에서 크게 주목을 받고 있어요.”

전미번역상에 대한 레빈 교수의 말이다.

전미번역상은 1990년에 제정된 미국의 대표적인 전문 번역문학상이다. 시와 산문으로 나누어서 시상하며 세계 최고의 권위를 자랑한다. 세계에서 유명한 ‘전미번역상’의 수상은 우리나라와 아시아에서도 처음인 이 놀라운 사건을 통하여 한국문학을 전 세계에 알렸다.

레빈 교수는 동시에 아시아 지역의 문학작품을 훌륭하게 번역한 사람에게 미국문학번역가협회에서 시상하는 루시엔 스트릭 번역상(Lucien Stryk Translation Prize)도 아시아지역에서 최초로 수상하여 또 한 번 한국문학을 세계 여론의 중심에 세웠다.

－어떻게 김이듬 시인의‘히스테리아’를 번역하게 되었습니까?

▶이건 참 재미있는 이야기입니다. 어느 날 김이듬 시인이 전화를 걸어왔어요. 슬로베니아에 살러 간다고 하며 그녀의 시를 번역해 달라고 말입니다.‘히스테리아’에 있는 시 20편을 번역해 달라고 했어요. 그때 제가 강의하는 대학원의 제 과목 학생이던 서소은 씨에게 같이 번역할 생각이 있느냐고 물어봤어요. 저는 그때 우리가 이 책을 번역해서 상을 탈거라고는 생각도 못했어요. 우리는 그 일을 하는 동안 정말 즐거웠어요. 그래서 우리는 계속해서 번역을 했고 마침내 책 전체를 번역하게 되었습니다. 나는 미국의 출판사 액션북스(Action Books) 편집자들을 알고 있었는데 그들 중 한 명이 한국에 왔을 때‘히스테리아’를 출판하기 위해 그와 상의했고 그래서 그 책은 마침내 태어나게 되었습니다.

―‘히스테리아’를 읽지 않은 사람을 위하여 이 시를 소개해 주시겠어요?

▶‘히스테리아’는 김이듬 시인이 2014년에 쓴 작품입니다. 그녀는 인물과 상상력을 이용해 사회의 다양한 드라마틱한 상황과 캐릭터를 탐구하는 작가이지요. 그녀의 작품은 종종 충격적이고 많은 사회적 이슈와 특히 여성과 관련된 문제들을 다루고 있습니다. 그녀는 페미니스트 작가이지만 개인적으로 저는 그녀의 작품이 제가 읽기에 아주 재미있다고 생각하는 블랙 유머를 사용한다고 생각합니다.

Won the National Translation Award and

Lucien Stryk Translation Prize

“This Award is given every year by the American Literary Translators Association to the best English translator from any language into English. It is unique because the judges and the award winning body are other translators. So unlike book prizes, this award uniquely reflects the quality of not only the book, but even more so, the translation. This is the first time an English translation from Asia has won this Award. So it is a big deal, not just for Korean literature in English translation, but for Asian literature translated into English.”

Asked by the reporter about what kind of award the National Translation Award is, Professor Levine said.

The National Translation Award is one of the most prestigious professional translation literature awards in the United States established in 1990. The news of winning the award is almost covered by large box articles, with Maeil Newspaper and all central newspapers.

At the same time, Professor Levin was awarded the Lucien Stryk Translation Prize too, which was awarded to a person who did a good job of translating Asian works. He received the Prize the first time in Korea and Asia region too, make putting Korean literature in the center of public opinion of the world once again.

－How did you come to translate Kim Yi-deum’s book of poetry Hysteria?

▶This is a funny story. Kim Yi-deum called me on the phone one day and asked me to translate her poetry because she was going to a residency in Slovenia. So she asked me to translate 20 poems from Hysteria, and I asked my then student Soeun Seo if she wanted to do them with me. I didn’t imagine then that we’d do the book and it would win prizes. But we had a really good time doing it, so we just kept translating and ended up doing the whole book. I knew the editors at Action Books in the United States and convinced them to publish Hysteria when one of them came to Korea. And so that’s how the book happened.

―For those who haven’t read it, could you introduce Hysteria?

▶Hysteria is by the poet Kim Yi-deum. It came out in 2014. Kim Yi-deum is a writer who uses the use of personal and the imagination to explore different dramatic situations and characters in society. Her work is often shocking and deals with a lot of social issues, and issues relating to women in particular. She is a feminist writer. But her work employs dark humor in a way. Her work is super fun to read.
